How to avoid fog and seasonal rain accidents on UAE roads and reduce the need for recovery.
Despite the UAE's mild winter, dense fog and January-February rains cause many of the chain accidents on highways. Hundreds of cars can be involved in a single accident due to zero visibility, making recovery services in peak demand during this period.
Fog in the UAE: usually concentrates between November and March, densest at dawn and pre-sunrise. Most affected roads: Sheikh Zayed Road between Dubai and Abu Dhabi, Emirates Road E611, and Mohammed Bin Zayed Road E311.
Fog driving tips: 1) reduce speed to 60-80 km/h. 2) turn on fog lights (front and rear), not high beams (they reflect back). 3) leave 4-5x the normal distance from the car ahead. 4) never stop on the highway under any condition.
If you must stop due to breakdown: exit the road immediately to the right shoulder, turn on hazards, place the reflective triangle, and wait away from the car. Call recovery immediately. See our breakdown safety guide.
Seasonal rains: may be short but heavy. Water pooling causes hydroplaning, especially on Dubai and Abu Dhabi streets. Check tires regularly, ensure wipers work, and avoid sudden braking.
Flooding in low areas: in Dubai, areas like Downtown and Bur Dubai are affected; in Sharjah, Al Majaz. Never try to cross water pools — water may enter the engine and you'll need fast recovery.
Winter maintenance: before the season check battery, cooling system, tire pressure, and wipers. This preventive maintenance significantly reduces your chance of needing recovery.
